CowTunas Most Frequently Asked Questions

What time of year is the best time to fish in these waters?
Peak gamefish migrations typically occur from October through the end of February. Each season will vary, and fish migrations depend on water temperatures, currents, bait supplies, etc., usually 75-degree water will attract the largest Tunas. Fall and Winter action for yellowfin tuna can give you a range from 50lbs to 300lbs plus trophy sized tunas. The most popular and productive months for our charters are October to November but December through the end of February will still get you your tuna! In general fishing is about being out on the water and going for it so come when you can, and we will take care of the rest.

Do we supply all the necessary fishing equipment?
Yes, our boat is outfitted with professional equipment. We can supply our guests with all the professional fishing equipment needed to catch big game fish. We use all professional level tournament Shimano reels, as well as the right length poles that you will need and all the terminal tackle. We have quality equipment that is tournament-winning, well-maintained, and superior for these local waters, ensuring that you can slay the big game fish.

What is the amount of a typical tip for the guide?
An average tip for the services of your Captain and mate is 15% to 20% of the total charter rate. There is no set fee, and you may tip accordingly. Just know that we work hard to serve you and help you to catch the fish of your dreams.

Is the live bait included in the price of the charter?
No. If you want to purchase bait it’s $300 pesos or $20 USD depending on the type of bait. At times anglers can catch their own larger baits for offshore trolling. Usually, we will find out what bait is available immediately before launching. If we will need SQUID or in Spanish called CALAMARI for chunking, you can purchase that separately at the Dock.

How long of boat ride to the fishing grounds?
The typical length of the boat ride to the various fishing grounds is from 15 to 60 miles. We normally concentrate on the areas where the tunas are hitting that day. These waters include the Sea of Cortez or south of Cabo San Lucas or we will find the Dolphine.

When does the boat leave in the morning and for how long?
Our Charters depart at first daylight, typically 6:30 am, and will return at 2:00 pm or until you get your catch. Come ready to enjoy a beautiful day on the water and to catch big game fish.

How many people can go? What if some of them do not fish?
Our 28 ft. Mako can accommodate 2 to 3 anglers. Capacity does matter if some people are just going to watch and will not be fishing. Mexican regulations require that all passengers that are 12 years and older must have on their person a valid Mexican fishing license, no matter if they are fishing or just watching.

Are lunches and beverages included?
We do not include lunch or beverages in the charter price, but for an additional cost we can offer a packed lunch. Feel free to pack a picnic basket and bring it along. Keep in mind that most of the time you will be busy fishing.

Do the charters all carry life preservers?
Yes, all our charters are equipped with life preservers. If you feel more comfortable wearing one just ask and we will get you strapped in.

What can we expect to do on an average charter?
Cowtunas.com plans out the trip the night before your excursion. We map out the exact coordinates where the tuna action is taking place. We will also find the banks that are producing the most active tuna action. You can expect some surface trolling with both bait and lures and then some drift fishing over rocky pinnacles. You can troll up to four surface lures but while trolling bait it is best to use only two or three lines to minimize tangles. We will work to find the best setups to get the most action and catch the biggest fish.

Where can we freeze our catch to take home with us?
Cowtuna.com has a complete wrapping service for your catch. Everything from zip lock to vacuum packing of your catch. We also have a SMOKING SERVICE for your catch. We will bag, label, and freeze your catch for a small fee until you depart back for home.

Are deposits refundable in case of foul weather?
Yes, deposits are completely refundable if the boats are unable to launch due to rain, high winds, or rough surf conditions. However, don’t let a little weather get in the way of a great day of fishing, if you have a reservation be ready to go out.

How far in advance do you need to make reservations?
During the peak fall and winter seasons of October through February. It would be wise to book your charter dates at least several months in advance with our easy Calendar reservation booking system at cowtunas.com.

What is the easiest way to contact Cowtunas.com once we arrive in Los Cabos?
The best way to contact your charter representative once you have arrived in Los Cabos is by e-mail reservations@cowtunas.com or text or call 949-294-6790. Be sure to include your name, hotel, and room number and we will get back to you as soon as possible. The best way to get to our charters from your accommodations is by using Uber services.

What is not included in the charter price?
The charter price does not include a Mexican Fishing License. An individual one-day fishing license currently costs $300 pesos, or $20 USD. Paying in pesos is a better deal than paying in dollars. Licenses are also sold by an official early in the morning at the same dock area where we meet.

Additional extras are customary tips for skipper/crew, fee for fish filleting service, or transportation to and from the launch area of La Playita in Puerto Los Cabos Marina.
